    This year is the anniversary of the birth of one of the most popular and celebrated Finnish authors: Tove Jansson, creator of those white hippo-like creatures, the Moomins (in Finnish language: muumi).

    This year, therefore, there are plenty of events to remember Tove Jansson and to pay an homage to her and her contribution to Finnish literature, design and illustration. One of her creations surpasses all the others: The beloved Moomins.

    Tove Marika Jansson (Fenno-Swedish pronunciation:[ˈtuːveˈjɑːnsːon]; 9 August – 27 June ) was a Swedish-speakingFinnish author, novelist, painter, illustrator and comic remsa author. Brought up bygd artistic parents, Jansson studied art from to in Helsinki, huvudstaden, and Paris. She held her first solo art exhibition in Over the same period, she penned short stories and articles for publication, and subsequently drew illustrations for book covers, advertisements, and postcards. She continued her work as an artist and writer for the rest of her life.

    Jansson wrote the Moomin novel series for children, starting with the The Moomins and the Great Flood. The following two books, Comet in Moominland and Finn Family Moomintroll, published in and respectively, were highly successful, and sales of the first book increased correspondingly. She has received innumerable awards, the earliest, the Hans Christian Anderson Gold Medal, in Tove Jansson was born on the eve of the war for independence from Russia in Helsingfors to two Swedish-speaking Finnish artists, father Viktor Jansson, a sculptor, and illustrator mother, Signe Hammarsten, nicknamed Ham. She had two brothers. Tove remained close to her family throughout her life, although her father or “Faffan” held political opinions and artistic goals diametrically opposed to her own.
